I would go a step further and say that there will be no empathy for (almost anybody, tbh, but especially) transgender folks of any age until there is widespread acceptance that essentialism - the idea that any identity can be reduced down to necessary and sufficient properties - is consigned to the dustbin of history and we accept the idea that the processes of Becoming, which we call go through (both through exogenous and endogenous factors), is what makes us who we are and who we will be.
