Agile didn't derive from the Manifesto published in 2001.
Agile has existed, often unlabelled, since the 1950s. Modern forms of agility were developed and published in the 1990s.
The word "agile" even comes from agile manufacturing (1991).
The manifesto is an interesting, and valuable, afterthought to a whole bunch of work.
